The Approach

Natural Wedding Photography in East Yorkshire

Your wedding day isn’t a photoshoot. It’s a celebration of the people you love, the promises you’re making and all those little moments that happen when nobody is thinking about the camera.

My approach to wedding photography is relaxed and unobtrusive. I spend much of the day observing rather than directing, photographing genuine laughter, emotional reactions and the connections between family and friends.

Of course, beautiful portraits matter too. I’ll help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, offering gentle direction when it’s useful, without making anything feel awkward or overly posed. The result is a collection of photographs that combines natural storytelling with elegant, timeless portraits.

I believe your wedding photographs should look and feel like your wedding. That means natural colours, authentic emotions and images you’ll enjoy looking back on for many years to come.

UNSCRIPTED MOMENTS

The Moments That Matter

Some of the most meaningful photographs are the ones nobody planned. The little moments that happen between the big events, when everyone is caught up in the celebration and has forgotten the camera is there.

The laughter during the speeches, a parent’s reaction during the ceremony, an unexpected embrace or a glance exchanged across the room. Often, it’s not just the person at the centre of attention who tells the story, but the expressions and emotions unfolding around them.

A wedding day is filled with these fleeting interactions. Some you’ll remember vividly, while others might pass you by entirely. Being able to look back and discover what was happening around you is one of the things that makes documentary wedding photography so special.

These are the memories I look for throughout your wedding day. Genuine, unrepeatable moments that reveal the personalities, relationships and atmosphere of your celebration, captured naturally without interrupting it.

THE EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHY

An Experienced Wedding Photographer Based in East Yorkshire

East Yorkshire is home, but my photography regularly takes me throughout Yorkshire and across the UK.

Working at such a variety of venues has given me experience of everything from intimate ceremonies and countryside barns to grand historic houses and busy hotel celebrations.

For me, experience isn’t simply about knowing the best place to stand for a photograph. It’s about recognising moments before they disappear, understanding how changing light affects a scene and adapting when the wedding day doesn’t unfold quite as expected.

I’m a full-time professional wedding photographer, and my work has received recognition from the Guild of Photographers, including Bronze and Silver Awards.

A bright ceremony room, a dark reception, unexpected rain or an evening celebration lit only by the room itself can all present different photographic challenges. I approach them with the preparation, professional equipment and experience needed to keep documenting your day without turning it into a production.

That matters particularly with documentary wedding photography. The moments worth remembering don’t wait until the lighting is perfect.

WEDDINGS CLOSER TO HOME

Wedding Venues Across East Yorkshire

From elegant country houses and historic estates to relaxed countryside barns and vineyards, East Yorkshire offers a wonderful variety of places to celebrate a wedding.

Based in Hull, I photograph weddings throughout the East Riding, including Beverley, Holderness, the Yorkshire Wolds, South Cave, Howden, Driffield and the surrounding countryside. For couples getting married in the city itself, explore my Hull wedding photography, featuring real weddings at Hull Guildhall, The Barn at Willerby Hill and other local venues.

Whether you’ve chosen a grand country-house venue or somewhere intimate and tucked away, my approach remains the same: natural storytelling, relaxed portraits and photography that reflects the character of your celebration.

01 / Beverley & Holderness

Country-House Weddings

East Yorkshire has some beautiful country-house wedding venues, each offering a distinctive atmosphere.

Rise Hall, near the Holderness coast, is an impressive historic country house, while Tickton Grange, just outside Beverley, combines Georgian architecture and landscaped grounds with a choice of wedding settings.

Further into Holderness, Dunedin Country House in Patrington is another distinctive setting for a wedding. Having photographed weddings at Dunedin, I understand the importance of adapting to the atmosphere, surroundings and changing light of each celebration.

Whether you’re planning a large wedding or a more intimate gathering, I aim to capture the emotion and personality of the occasion while making the most of the venue you’ve chosen.

02 / yorkshire wolds

Wolds & South Cave Weddings

The Yorkshire Wolds provide a beautiful setting for countryside weddings, with rolling landscapes, open skies and a wonderfully relaxed rural atmosphere.

Around South Cave, Little Wold Vineyard offers a distinctive alternative to traditional wedding venues, with vineyard surroundings and countryside views.

Cave Castle Hotel combines historic architecture and established grounds, and is another East Yorkshire venue where I’ve photographed weddings.

Other venues in and around the Wolds include Hotham Hall, Bunny Hill Weddings and The Manor Rooms, each offering its own character for couples looking to celebrate in the East Yorkshire countryside.

I particularly enjoy finding natural portrait opportunities that complement the surroundings without taking couples away from their guests for long.

Sometimes a quiet path, an interesting backdrop or a few minutes of beautiful evening light is all that’s needed to create something memorable.

03 / HOWDEN & THE WESTERN EAST RIDING

Barn Weddings and Country Estates Near Howden

The countryside around Howden offers some wonderful possibilities for couples who prefer a relaxed rural wedding or an elegant country-house celebration.

Riverlands Wedding Barns, at Faxfleet, brings together beautifully restored barns, outdoor spaces and the freedom of a countryside setting. Nearby, Saltmarshe Hall offers a very different atmosphere, with historic country-house surroundings close to the River Ouse.

Both styles of venue can provide wonderful opportunities for documentary wedding photography, from the anticipation of the ceremony to the spontaneous celebrations and interactions between guests.

My experience also includes weddings at The Barn at Willerby Hill, closer to Hull, where I’ve recently photographed a celebration full of the natural moments that define my approach.

Wherever you’re getting married in East Yorkshire, you don’t need to worry about whether I’ve photographed your particular venue before. I’ll take the time to understand your plans and work with the surroundings, available light and atmosphere of your wedding to create photographs that feel genuinely yours.

The advantage of two photographers

Two Photographers. One Complete Wedding Story.

Your wedding day is filled with moments happening simultaneously. While you’re exchanging vows, your parents may be fighting back tears. While you’re laughing with friends, someone across the room might be sharing a quiet embrace.

It’s impossible for one photographer to be everywhere at once. That’s why both of my full-day wedding photography collections include two photographers.

Two Perspectives. One Unrepeatable Moment.

As the bride walked down the aisle, I photographed her arrival from the front of the church, close to the reverend. Meanwhile, Susan was positioned at the back, using a 70–200mm lens to capture the groom’s reaction.

Two photographers, two completely different viewpoints, and one moment that could never be repeated.

It’s a perfect example of why we work together. While one of us concentrates on the main event, the other can capture the emotions and reactions unfolding around it, creating a more complete photographic story.

More of Your Wedding, Beautifully Captured

Throughout your celebration, Susan and I work independently when needed, photographing different perspectives, spontaneous interactions and the atmosphere among your guests.

During the ceremony and reception, this allows us to preserve moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. For couples choosing our Exclusive Collection, having two photographers also means we can cover preparations for both partners, telling both sides of the wedding morning.

Whether you’re celebrating in East Yorkshire or elsewhere in the UK, having two experienced photographers allows us to document more of the people, emotions and moments that make your wedding unique.

The result is a richer, more complete wedding gallery, with the big moments, the little details and everything in between.

BEAUTIFULLY NATURAL PORTRAITS

Beautiful Portraits Without Missing Your Wedding

Documentary photography is at the heart of what I do, but I also believe you deserve beautiful portraits of the two of you together.

Your wedding day shouldn’t revolve around the camera. We’ll make time for photographs without keeping you away from your guests for longer than necessary. I look for flattering light, considered backgrounds and natural interactions, offering gentle direction when it’s helpful while keeping everything relaxed and enjoyable.

Whether we’re photographing in the gardens of an East Yorkshire country house, beside a rustic barn or against the open countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds, I want your portraits to reflect both the surroundings and the connection between you.

A Little Something Special After Dark

As daylight fades, I love creating something a little more atmospheric.

Using professional off-camera lighting, I can create elegant twilight portraits, striking silhouettes and beautifully illuminated evening photographs that bring another dimension to your wedding gallery.

These photographs can be particularly special when the weather, location and timing come together. We only need a few minutes away from the celebrations, and there’s no need for anything to feel overly posed or theatrical.

It’s this balance of genuine moments and thoughtfully crafted portraits that defines my work: photography that feels authentic to your wedding while giving you something special to look back on.

YOUR WEDDING INVESTMENT

Wedding Photography With Lasting Value

Your wedding photographs are one of the few things you’ll keep long after the celebrations have ended. That’s why my full-day wedding photography collections bring together natural documentary storytelling, two photographers and a beautifully crafted wedding album.

From the anticipation of the morning to the atmosphere of the evening, Susan and I capture your wedding from different perspectives, creating a collection of photographs that tells your story and an album you can return to for years to come.

Full-day wedding photography collections start at £1,650, with UK travel included. Shorter coverage is also available for intimate weddings and twilight celebrations.

The Finished Story

Your Wedding Photographs Deserve to Be More Than Files

There’s something special about sitting down together and turning the pages of your wedding album.

Instead of hundreds of photographs stored on a computer or phone, you have a carefully designed story you can hold, share with family and return to whenever you want to remember the day.

From the anticipation of getting ready to the emotions of the ceremony, the speeches, the dancing and everything in between, an album brings those chapters together.

That’s why a beautifully crafted 12×12-inch wedding album is included in both my full-day wedding photography collections, alongside your professionally edited digital photographs and private online gallery.

A lasting part of your wedding story, included from the beginning.

Your wedding album isn’t an optional upgrade or an additional expense after your wedding. Its cost is already included in your chosen full-day collection, so you know from the outset exactly what you’re investing in, without having to make a separate album purchase later.

Your Story – Signature includes a 30-page wedding album, while Your Story – Exclusive includes an extended 60-page album with a matching presentation box.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Meet Darren & Susan

I’m Darren Cartledge-Price, the photographer behind Darren Cartledge Photography, and Hull is where Susan and I call home.

Although weddings regularly take us throughout Yorkshire and across the UK, there’s something particularly lovely about photographing a celebration closer to home, surrounded by the countryside, towns and villages we’ve come to know so well.

Susan is my wife and fellow wedding photographer. We share a relaxed, friendly approach to photographing weddings, and we understand that most couples aren’t used to spending their day in front of professional cameras.

You don’t need to know how to pose or feel comfortable being the centre of attention. We’ll offer a little guidance when it’s helpful, step back when the moment calls for it and give you the freedom to enjoy your wedding as it unfolds.

More than anything, we want you to feel that you’ve invited two people you can trust to capture one of the most important days of your lives.
