DARREN CARTLEDGE PHOTOGRAPHY

Hull Wedding Photographer

Natural documentary wedding photography, beautiful portraits and memories made to last.

I’m Darren Cartledge-Price, an award-winning wedding photographer based in Hull, East Yorkshire. Alongside my wife Susan, I photograph weddings with a relaxed, unobtrusive approach, capturing genuine emotions, spontaneous moments and the connections that make every celebration unique.

From traditional church weddings and ceremonies in Hull’s historic city centre to celebrations at venues across the surrounding area, we create photographs that tell your story naturally, combining beautiful portraits with the moments you never want to forget.

ROOTED IN HULL

Wedding Photography in Hull – The City I Call Home

Hull isn’t simply somewhere I travel to photograph weddings. It’s home, and a city I’ve had the pleasure of photographing in many different ways.

From the historic architecture of the Old Town and the character of Humber Street to the greenery of Queens Gardens and Pearson Park, Hull offers a wonderful variety of settings for wedding photography.

I’ve photographed couples amongst the city’s familiar streets and landmarks, including portraits beside one of Hull’s iconic cream telephone boxes, as well as ceremonies and celebrations at some of the area’s best-known wedding venues.

But knowing the city is only part of what makes photographing weddings here special.

It’s about understanding how to make the most of the surroundings, recognising beautiful light when it appears and knowing when to offer a little direction and when to let a moment happen naturally.

Whether you’re planning an intimate city-centre ceremony, a traditional church wedding or a full-day celebration at a venue near Hull, my approach is always centred on you, your guests and the story of your day.

THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER

The Moments That Make Your Wedding Yours

Some of the most meaningful wedding photographs are the ones nobody planned.

The nervous anticipation before the ceremony. The smile exchanged between two people who think nobody is watching. A parent’s expression during the vows, unexpected laughter in the speeches or the atmosphere when everyone finally reaches the dance floor.

These are the moments I look for throughout a wedding day.

My approach is predominantly documentary. Rather than constantly directing people, asking them to repeat moments or interrupting what’s happening, I work quietly and attentively, photographing genuine emotions and interactions as they unfold.

Every wedding has its own personalities, atmosphere and pace. Some are intimate and understated, others are filled with energy from morning until night. I believe your photographs should reflect that individuality rather than follow a predetermined collection of poses.

Of course, the important events are captured too. But often it’s the quieter, less obvious moments that bring the memories flooding back years later.

HULL THROUGH MY LENS

Wedding Portraits Around Hull’s Old Town, Gardens and Waterfront

One of the things I love about photographing weddings in Hull is the variety of settings available within the city itself.

Beautiful wedding portraits don’t always require sweeping countryside views or the grounds of a grand country house. Sometimes a historic street, a quiet corner of a garden or the changing light along the waterfront offers something just as memorable.

01 / HULL OLD TOWN

Hull Old Town and
Historic High Street

Hull’s Old Town is full of character, with distinctive architecture, historic streets and familiar landmarks that provide a wonderful setting for wedding portraits.

I’ve photographed couples along the High Street and among the surrounding buildings, including portraits featuring one of the city’s unmistakable cream telephone boxes.

For couples who want their photographs to reflect where they married, these little details can add a real sense of place without taking the attention away from the people in the picture.

02 / GREEN SPACES

Queens Gardens and Pearson Park

Bride and groom walking together through Queens Gardens in Hull on their wedding day.

The greenery of Queens Gardens provides a beautiful contrast to Hull’s historic streets, with open spaces, mature trees and quieter corners close to the city centre.

I’ve photographed couples walking together through the gardens, making the most of the natural surroundings to create relaxed portraits that don’t feel overly posed.

My experience also includes Pearson Park Conservatory, another distinctive Hull location whose Victorian architecture offers something quite different.
These settings are particularly lovely for couples who want natural, romantic photographs while remaining close to the heart of the city.

03 / THE WATERFRONT

Hull’s Waterfront and
Humber Street

Hull’s waterfront offers another side of the city, with open views, historic surroundings and the character of the Humber Street area.

I’ve photographed couples around the waterfront, using the changing light, architecture and atmosphere to create portraits with a more contemporary, urban feel.

It’s one of the things I enjoy about city wedding photography. A short walk can take you through completely different surroundings, offering opportunities for photographs that feel varied while still belonging to the same wedding story.

A RELAXED APPROACH

Beautiful Portraits Without the Endless Posing

Wherever we take your portraits, my approach remains relaxed.

I’ll offer gentle guidance when needed, help you feel comfortable and make the most of the light and surroundings without expecting you to perform for the camera.

I also enjoy creating something a little more dramatic when the opportunity arises, particularly with evening light, silhouettes and twilight portraits.

Most importantly, I don’t believe beautiful wedding photographs should mean disappearing from your celebration for hours. A little time, thoughtfully used, can create photographs you’ll treasure while leaving you free to enjoy your wedding.

Local Wedding Experience

Hull Wedding Venues, Churches and Celebrations

Having photographed weddings throughout Hull and the surrounding area, I’ve become particularly familiar with some of its best-known wedding settings.

Three venues where I’ve photographed weddings regularly are Hull Guildhall, The Barn at Willerby Hill and Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel. Each offers a very different experience, from historic city-centre ceremonies to countryside celebrations and larger hotel weddings.

01 / FEATURED VENUE

Weddings at Hull Guildhall

Hull Guildhall is one of the city’s most recognisable settings for a wedding ceremony.

I’ve photographed ceremonies and wedding portraits here on numerous occasions, capturing the emotions of the ceremony alongside the elegance of the building’s interior architecture.

The surroundings also offer opportunities for beautiful portraits, while the nearby streets of Hull’s Old Town provide an entirely different atmosphere just a short distance away.

For couples planning a Guildhall wedding, I understand the importance of making the most of the setting while allowing the ceremony and celebrations to unfold naturally.

02 / FEATURED VENUE

Weddings at The Barn at Willerby Hill

The Barn at Willerby Hill offers a very different setting from a city-centre wedding.

Having photographed weddings here regularly, I’m familiar with the contrast between the indoor celebrations and the open countryside surroundings.

The venue provides opportunities for natural documentary photography throughout the day, alongside relaxed portraits outdoors when the light and weather allow.

I particularly enjoy the way a countryside setting can change throughout a wedding, from the excitement of the celebrations to quieter moments together as the light begins to soften.

03 / FEATURED VENUE

Weddings at Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel

Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel in Willerby is another venue where I’ve photographed weddings regularly.

With its hotel setting, indoor event spaces and surrounding gardens, it offers a different range of photographic opportunities from both the Guildhall and the Barn.

Working at familiar venues gives me an understanding of their surroundings, but every wedding is still different. The people, the atmosphere, the weather and the available light all influence how the day is photographed.

My aim is always to work with those differences rather than produce the same set of photographs for every couple.

BEYOND THE MAIN VENUES

Experience Beyond the Main Venues

My local wedding photography experience extends beyond these three venues.

I’ve also photographed weddings at Lazaat, traditional church ceremonies followed by receptions at separate venues, and celebrations at Clapham Holme Farm towards Hornsea.

Further into East Yorkshire, my experience includes civil ceremonies at Beverley Register Office.
This variety has given me experience of different ceremony settings, changing lighting conditions and wedding days spread across multiple locations.

Whether you’re celebrating in a familiar venue or somewhere I’ve yet to photograph, I bring the same preparation, calm approach and attention to detail to every wedding.

TWO PERSPECTIVES. ONE STORY.

Two Photographers. One Complete Wedding Story.

A wedding day is full of moments happening at the same time.

While one partner is walking towards the ceremony, the other may be waiting nervously at the front. During the speeches, the person speaking is only part of the story – there are reactions, laughter and emotional expressions throughout the room.

Having two photographers gives us the opportunity to capture more of those moments.

Susan and I photograph weddings together, working from different perspectives while sharing the same relaxed, documentary approach. We understand how each other works, allowing us to concentrate on different parts of the celebration without constantly interrupting what is happening.

Sometimes that means capturing the same important moment from two completely different viewpoints. At other times, it means photographing the quieter interactions taking place away from the main event.

Both of my full-day wedding photography collections include two photographers as standard.

Your Story – Signature provides coverage from preparations for one partner through to shortly after the first dance.

Your Story – Exclusive offers unlimited wedding-day coverage, including preparations for both partners.

For you, the benefit is a fuller photographic record of your wedding, capturing not just the main events but more of the people and moments surrounding them.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPHY

Meet Darren & Susan – Your Hull Wedding Photographers

I’m Darren Cartledge-Price, the photographer behind Darren Cartledge Photography, and Hull is the place Susan and I call home.

We photograph weddings together with a friendly, relaxed and unobtrusive approach, helping couples feel comfortable while we concentrate on capturing the moments that matter.

We know that most people aren’t used to being photographed, and we certainly don’t expect you to spend your wedding day knowing how to pose or wondering what you should be doing in front of the camera.

Our job is to make the photography feel natural, offering guidance when it’s helpful and quietly documenting the celebration when it isn’t needed.

As a full-time professional wedding photographer, I’ve photographed celebrations in a wide variety of settings throughout Yorkshire and across the UK.

My work has also received recognition from the Guild of Photographers, including sixteen Bronze Awards and one Silver Award.

Those achievements mean a great deal to me, but so does the trust couples place in us. Being invited to photograph a wedding is a responsibility we take seriously, from our preparation before the day to the care taken with every finished photograph.

Whether you’re celebrating in Hull itself or at a venue further afield, we’d love to help you preserve your wedding story.
