Wedding Photography Across Yorkshire
Award-winning Yorkshire wedding photographer
I’m Darren, the photographer behind Darren Cartledge Photography, based in Hull, East Yorkshire.
I photograph weddings throughout North, East, South and West Yorkshire, as well as celebrations across the UK. Around 90% of the weddings I’ve photographed have taken place in Yorkshire, giving me extensive experience of the region’s different venues, locations and celebrations.
My approach combines natural documentary wedding photography with sophisticated, relaxed portraits. I capture the genuine moments that make your wedding personal, while creating beautiful photographs of the two of you without turning your celebration into an extended photoshoot.
From elegant country-house weddings to lively celebrations in barns, hotels and historic venues, no two weddings are quite the same.
And that’s exactly how I believe they should be photographed.
Natural Documentary Wedding Photography in Yorkshire
Genuine Moments. Beautifully Captured.
Your wedding is about far more than the ceremony and the photographs you plan in advance.
It’s the anticipation during preparations, the expressions as you walk down the aisle, the laughter during speeches and the moments shared with family and friends.
Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when nobody is thinking about the camera.
That’s what draws me to documentary wedding photography.
Rather than directing every moment, I observe what’s happening around me and photograph the story as it naturally unfolds.
The result is a collection of images that reflects the people, atmosphere and emotions of your wedding, rather than a sequence of staged photographs.
Documentary Photography With Beautiful Portraits
Choosing documentary wedding photography doesn’t mean sacrificing elegant couple portraits or traditional family photographs.
My approach combines natural storytelling with carefully composed portraits, allowing you to enjoy both.
For most of the day, I work unobtrusively, capturing events as they happen.
When it’s time for your couple photographs, I’ll offer gentle direction, find the best available light and create images that feel relaxed, natural and sophisticated.
You won’t be expected to spend hours posing or performing for the camera.
I want your photographs to look beautiful, but I also want you to enjoy the experience of having them taken.
An Experienced Wedding Photographer Across Yorkshire
Every Venue Is Different. Every Wedding Is Different.
Being a Yorkshire wedding photographer doesn’t mean photographing the same handful of venues every weekend.
Although I’m based in Hull, I travel extensively throughout Yorkshire and across the UK. Unless a venue is relatively local to home, it’s unusual for me to photograph weddings at the same location repeatedly.
That variety is something I genuinely enjoy.
Every venue presents different opportunities and challenges.
Some have beautiful landscaped grounds, while others have very little outdoor space. Historic buildings can have challenging lighting, and large country-house venues may require more time to move between portrait locations.
Even familiar venues can look completely different depending on the season, weather and time of day.
I believe a competent professional wedding photographer should be able to arrive at an unfamiliar location, assess the light and surroundings, and quickly recognise photographic opportunities.
It’s a skill developed through experience rather than simply knowing where previous couples have stood for photographs.

Do Wedding Photographers Need to Visit Venues Beforehand?
Not necessarily.
I rarely need to visit a wedding venue in advance.
When photographing at a particularly large or unfamiliar venue, I’ll arrive early to explore the surroundings, identify suitable portrait locations and speak with the wedding coordinator about any useful areas or practical considerations.
However, I don’t rely on predetermined photographs or a fixed list of locations.
The weather, available light and atmosphere of the wedding often influence where and how the best photographs are created.
Two weddings at the same venue can produce very different photographs, and I believe that’s a good thing.
Real Yorkshire Weddings
Experience Behind the Photographs
Photographing weddings across Yorkshire has given me experience of different venues, lighting conditions and celebrations.
These two examples show how professional experience can influence the photographs without disrupting the wedding itself.
The Moorlands • West Yorkshire
Working With Challenging Light.
The Moorlands was the setting for one of the liveliest celebrations featured in my wedding portfolio.
During the speeches, the sweetheart table had been positioned directly in front of large glass doors.
This created particularly challenging lighting conditions.
One side of the room was extremely bright, while the other was comparatively dark. With the couple seated against the bright windows, the difference in light levels required careful attention to exposure and positioning.
Fortunately, the reception space at The Moorlands is generously proportioned, giving us the freedom to move around the room and find more favourable angles.
Rather than interrupting the speeches or changing the arrangement, we worked with the available space and lighting to continue documenting the reactions and moments as they happened.
It’s a good example of why experience matters in documentary wedding photography.
You can’t always control where important moments happen, but you can adapt to the conditions while allowing the celebration to continue naturally.

SKIPTON HOTEL • NORTH YORKSHIRE
Finding an Award-Winning Photograph

Not every wedding venue has extensive gardens or dedicated outdoor portrait locations. At a wedding at Skipton Hotel, I needed to look beyond the hotel itself to find somewhere suitable for the couple’s photographs. Just moments before taking the photograph, I spotted a small track beside a nearby farm, surrounded by long grasses and open countryside.
There had been no advance scouting or carefully planned location. I simply recognised the photographic potential of the scene. Using the long grasses to frame the couple and the track to lead the eye through the photograph, I captured a natural moment of them walking together beneath the summer sky. That photograph went on to receive a Bronze Award from the Guild of Photographers.
It’s a reminder that beautiful wedding photography doesn’t depend on grand surroundings or knowing a venue inside out. Sometimes the best photographic opportunities are found just beyond the obvious locations.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN YORKSHIRE
Wedding Photography Across North, East, South and West Yorkshire
Yorkshire offers an enormous variety of places to celebrate a wedding, from historic buildings and elegant country houses to countryside barns, hotels and contemporary venues.
I photograph weddings throughout all four regions of Yorkshire, adapting my approach to the location, available light and atmosphere of each celebration.
East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
Hull and East Yorkshire are home. I photograph weddings throughout Hull, Beverley, the Yorkshire Wolds, Holderness and the surrounding areas. Being based locally means I’m particularly familiar with the variety of wedding settings available in East Yorkshire, from rural venues to historic buildings and contemporary hotels. My experience includes weddings at The Barn at Willerby Hill, Cave Castle, Dunedin House, Lazaat’s, alongside many other locations throughout the region.
NORTH Yorkshire
North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
North Yorkshire offers everything from historic towns and coastal settings to countryside venues and landscapes around the Yorkshire Dales. I photograph weddings throughout North Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Whitby, Skipton and the surrounding areas. My work includes weddings at Sneaton Castle, Allerton Castle, Hackness Grange and Danby Castle Barn. The award-winning photograph taken near Skipton Hotel is a particularly good example of finding photographic opportunities beyond the immediate venue surroundings.
South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
I photograph weddings throughout South Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and the surrounding areas. South Yorkshire has an interesting mix of historic country houses, rural venues and contemporary wedding locations. My experience includes photographing weddings at Whitley Hall and Bawtry Hall, where elegant couple portraits and lively documentary moments came together to tell the story of the celebration.
West Yorkshire
West Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
I photograph weddings across West Yorkshire, including Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford and surrounding areas. My experience includes Holdsworth House, Waterton Park Hotel and The Moorlands. The Moorlands wedding featured in my portfolio demonstrates how I approach lively celebrations and challenging indoor lighting while keeping the photography natural and unobtrusive.
How Much Does Wedding Photography Cost in Yorkshire?
Wedding photography prices across Yorkshire vary depending on the photographer, the amount of coverage and what’s included. My wedding photography collections start at £400 for intimate, primarily ceremony-focused coverage, with full-day wedding photography starting at £1,650.
For full-day weddings, Susan and I photograph together, capturing your celebration from different perspectives. Our full-day collections also include a beautiful 12×12-inch wedding album. Travel is included in my collection prices. Smaller collections are available throughout Yorkshire, while full-day wedding photography includes travel anywhere in the UK.
Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a full-day celebration, you can explore the different coverage options and everything included on my dedicated Wedding Collections page.
THE BENEFIT OF TWO PERSPECTIVES
Why Have Two Wedding Photographers?
For full-day weddings, Susan and I photograph together. Having two photographers means we can document different perspectives and moments throughout the wedding.
During preparations, we can photograph different locations when arrangements allow. At the ceremony, one of us might be capturing the exchange of vows while the other photographs the reactions of family and friends. During speeches and evening celebrations, two perspectives help us preserve both the important events and the spontaneous reactions happening around them.
The benefit isn’t simply having more photographs. It’s having a more complete account of the wedding, including moments that would otherwise be difficult for one photographer to capture simultaneously. We work together regularly and share the same documentary approach, allowing us to photograph the day naturally without unnecessary interruption.
WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE
Planning Your Wedding Photography in Yorkshire
01.
How Much Time Should You Allow for Couple Portraits?
I generally recommend allowing approximately 30–45 minutes in total for couple portraits, although the amount of time needed depends on the venue, its size and the photographs you’d like. At particularly large venues, simply travelling between suitable locations can take time.
Rather than completing every portrait in one session, I often split the photography into several shorter sessions throughout the day. This allows us to take advantage of different lighting conditions, including softer evening light, sunset and twilight. It also gives you more opportunities to spend time with your guests instead of disappearing for one long photoshoot.
The aim is to create a varied collection of beautiful portraits without allowing photography to dominate your wedding.
02.
How Many Family Group Photographs Should You Have?
I generally recommend preparing a list of around 10–15 family and group photograph combinations. Group photographs are important, but lengthy lists can quickly become difficult to organise.
Guests naturally move between different areas of the venue, particularly once the drinks reception begins. Finding people who have wandered off can take considerably longer than taking the photograph itself. I recommend appointing a family member or trusted friend who knows the people involved to help gather each group.
This helps everything run smoothly, reduces waiting around and allows you to get back to enjoying your celebration.
03.
What Happens if It Rains on Your Wedding Day?
A little rain doesn’t have to limit your wedding photography. Yorkshire weather can be unpredictable, which is why I always arrive prepared with a dedicated wet-weather kit, including a complete indoor lighting setup. Whatever the conditions, I can adapt my approach to create beautiful photographs without relying entirely on natural light.
Rain can also present some wonderful photographic opportunities. I bring white umbrellas to every wedding, and for couples happy to embrace the weather, we can create dramatic, atmospheric portraits that make the rain part of the story. Alternatively, we can take advantage of sheltered spaces, beautiful interiors or quieter moments between showers.
The key is flexibility. I work with the conditions rather than against them, finding opportunities as the day unfolds without unnecessarily interrupting your celebration. After all, the weather is only one small part of your wedding story.
04.
When Is the Best Time for Wedding Portraits?
There isn’t one perfect time for every wedding. The best light depends on the season, weather, surroundings and orientation of the venue.
Soft evening light can create beautiful portraits, while twilight offers opportunities for a different atmosphere. That’s one reason I often recommend splitting couple portraits into shorter sessions throughout the day.
It allows us to create variety without placing unnecessary pressure on your schedule.
